The area in and around Gran Alacant had remained relatively undiscovered as a holiday resort for the English until quite recently, although it has been very popular with the Spanish for many years.
Gran Alacant is situated on the Costa Blanca South, only twelve kilometres from Alicante, lying between the near totally Spanish populated towns of Santa Pola and El Altet. Gran Alacant is surrounded by the Clot de Galvany nature reserve and the salt lake bird sanctuary of Santa Pola, with species such as flamingos, coloured duck, the shoveler, pintail, marbled duck, The most common raptors are the lake eaglet (circus aeruginosus) and the osprey or fish eagle (pandion haliaetus), to name a few.
Gran Alacant is comprised of a number of small urbanizations, our house being situated on Montefaro. The urbanization has probably the largest landscaped swimming pool in Gran Alacant, there are also two tennis courts, an all weather football pitch and children’s play area. There are plenty of bars and restaurants around Gran Alacant offering cuisines from a range of different nationalities. Supermarkets are plentiful, just about all of these and the beach can be reached by the road train that circuits the area every hour, or for traveling further a field the local bus stop is just outside the urbanization.
There are many beaches in the area, suitable for children of all ages. Some have beach bars for those who like to sit and watch the world go by.
The area is ideal for sporting enthusiasts. There are a many golf courses within easy reach by car. Other sports include sailing, scuba diving, para gliding, fishing, kite surfing and wind surfing. Santa Pola has been chosen to hold the 2009 wind surfing world championships.
